At Maddock & Associates, we believe healthy habits start at home - and that includes movement! As benefits advocates, we spend a lot of time helping employees access great care and coverage, but we’re just as passionate about helping families build everyday routines that support long-term wellness.
That’s why we’re excited to share that National Exercise With Your Child Week is coming up August 4–10! This nationwide observance encourages parents and caregivers to get active with their children; not just cheering from the sidelines, but joining in.
Whether it’s a post-dinner walk, a weekend hike, or a goofy dance party in the living room, the goal is to spend quality time moving together. These shared moments support physical health, mental wellbeing, and strong family connections - and can help kids form lifelong healthy habits.
Simple Ways to Celebrate
- 👟 Take a Family Walk or Bike Ride Turn your neighborhood into a mini adventure! Choose a scenic route or let the kids help pick the path. Make it interactive—count how many dogs you see, find flowers of different colors, or have a friendly race to the next mailbox. If biking, don’t forget helmets and maybe end with a fun stop like a smoothie shop or playground.
- 💃 Try a Fun YouTube Dance or Yoga Video Together Clear a little space in the living room and search for “family dance workout” or “kids yoga” on YouTube. There are tons of short, free videos geared toward all ages. Dancing helps everyone shake off stress, and yoga builds flexibility and focus. Plus, it’s just plain fun to see everyone try to master the same moves!
- 🏈 Play a Game of Catch, Tag, or Hopscotch Classic playground games are timeless for a reason! Whether you're tossing a ball, chasing each other around the yard, or drawing chalk hopscotch on the driveway, these simple activities are great for burning energy and sharing laughs. Modify the rules for younger kids to keep things encouraging and inclusive.
- 🏃♂️ Set Up a Backyard Obstacle Course or Mini Sports Day Use what you have at home—hula hoops, cones, jump ropes, even couch cushions—to set up a silly and active challenge course. Time each other running through it or compete in “events” like sack races or frisbee tosses. Let your kids help design it to boost creativity and ownership.
- 🌲 Explore a Local Park or Trail Pack some water and a snack and head to a nearby park or nature trail. Look for wildlife, climb on logs, or collect cool rocks or leaves. Getting outdoors is great for your body and mind, and exploring together builds a sense of shared adventure. Bonus points if you find a spot with a playground or water feature!
Exercise doesn’t have to be formal or time-consuming... it just has to be fun and shared. This week is a great opportunity to step away from screens, reduce stress, and make memories that are good for everyone’s health.
From our team at Maddock & Associates to yours: have fun, get moving, and take care of each other. 💚
