World Sleep Day 2026 falls on Friday, March 13, and this year’s theme says it best: Sleep Well, Live Better.
Sleep is not just a “nice to have.” It impacts energy, mood, focus, and long-term health. For employers, it also affects productivity, safety, and burnout risk. The good news: you do not have to tackle sleep support alone. Many employee benefit plans include tools that can help.
1) Start with the simplest win: use preventive care
If someone is consistently not sleeping well, it can be connected to stress, medications, lifestyle changes, or underlying health concerns. Preventive visits and primary care are often the best starting point for getting personalized guidance.
Tip: Encourage employees to schedule an annual wellness visit, and to mention sleep concerns directly. It is a common topic, and it is okay to bring up.
2) Remember your EAP and mental health benefits
Stress, anxiety, grief, and burnout can show up as “I just can’t sleep.” Many employer plans include:
- EAP counseling sessions
- Behavioral health visits (in-person or virtual)
- Digital mental health tools
These resources can help employees build coping strategies and routines that support better rest.
3) Don’t ignore snoring and daytime exhaustion
Loud snoring, morning headaches, and daytime fatigue can be signs that it is time to talk with a healthcare provider. Some medical plans support sleep evaluations and treatment options when medically necessary.
4) Build a workplace culture that supports rest
Benefits are powerful, but culture matters too. Simple employer-friendly ideas:
- Promote realistic workload planning during peak seasons
- Encourage breaks and true lunch time
- Normalize using PTO and mental health resources
- Share a short “sleep basics” reminder during open enrollment or wellness pushes
5) A simple World Sleep Day challenge (easy and realistic)
Invite employees to try this for one week:
- Keep the same wake-up time each day
- Get outside light early in the day
- Cut caffeine earlier than usual
- Put screens away 30 minutes before bed (or switch to a calmer routine)
Small changes are easier to sustain, and they add up.
