Final Call: Two Medicare Enrollment Periods End March 31
March is the last month for two important Medicare enrollment windows.
Both the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP) and the General Enrollment Period (GEP) close on March 31.
If you need to make a change or enroll in coverage, now is the time to act.
Waiting until the final week can create unnecessary stress and limit your options.
What Is the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period?
The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs from January 1 through March 31.
This window allows individuals who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan to:
- Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan
- Drop Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare
- Add a Part D prescription drug plan if returning to Original Medicare
This period is for changes only. It is not for brand new Medicare enrollments.
What Is the General Enrollment Period?
The General Enrollment Period also runs from January 1 through March 31.
This period is for individuals who did not sign up for Medicare Part A and/or Part B when first eligible and do not qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
Keep in mind:
- Coverage typically begins on the first day of the month following the month in which you apply
- Late enrollment penalties may apply
If you delayed enrolling and are unsure what that means for you, it is important to review your situation before the deadline.
Why You Should Not Wait
The final weeks of March are typically busy.
Plan changes require:
- Reviewing current coverage
- Confirming provider networks
- Checking prescription coverage
- Completing enrollment paperwork
Starting early allows time to ask questions and avoid last-minute issues.
